Warren Gatland reacts to the Lions first loss of tour against South Africa 'A' | RugbyPass

Warren Gatland insisted his British and Irish Lions players left Cape Town Stadium with renewed conviction of their ability to win the Test series despite a 17-13 defeat by South Africa A. A powerful shadow Springboks squad containing 11 World Cup winners and packed with 522 caps started ominously as they ran into a 17-3 half-time lead, but the Lions fought back through a Wyn Jones try and the boot of Owen Farrell.

  1. Gatland comes across as another Eddie Jones, even with the loss he is proud that they did well… SA with 2 men in the sin bin did quite well under the circumstances..To me the Lions can get a jist of what to expect for the tests and can use this game to plan accordingly. For SA, well lots of players still to come in….Kolisi, Vermeulen, Pollard and a few others if fit. So its going to be an interesting 1st Test , Favorites just due to playing time together and playing are the Lions.

  2. The Lions were foxing, they didn’t show a thing, quick tap everything, don’t go to set piece. He setting a trap and Saffas are falling for it hook, line and sinker.

  3. For most of the game it didn't look like the Defensive offside/behind the back foot was being enforced by Jaco Peyper. And that doesn't make for an exciting spectacle.

  4. That SA A side is tough, what is the SA B going to be and more importantly how the hell are the All-Blacks going to deal with the breakdowns against SA, which after Fiji game is a serious concern.

  5. Need to ensure from a lions point of view the TV camera angles and positioning is correct. It is critical when head shots and tries are missed / disallowed due to it not being visible because he camera angle is not high enough. It is well known SA are going to be under the cosh with their rule breaking so it’s in their interest to get this wrong. Wake up Lions Management!

  6. This guy wants to complain about Rassie Being a waterboy, how about telling your boys to stop cheating??? Twice they've held faf, and that swinging from the side in mauls is disgusting.

  7. The Springboks ambushed the Lions using Springbok A as the vehicle needing to give their guys a runout. The Lions didn't have their strongest side but I don't like the Lions losing and particularly outside the tests. The test of Warren's selection will be the front row and midfield…SA haven't had much rugby but are dangerous – not world champions for nothing!

  8. This looks like a man that tries his best to stay positive for the sake of his team. But deep down inside he is very nervous and don't have a clue at this stage what he is going to do to get his team to match the boks physically, especially in defense and at the rugs. He just don't have the pack that the boks have. Remember also that 11 boks didn't play last night that probably will be involved in one way or another in the test series so the boks are gonna step up another level!

  9. Farrel baiting , there's no finer kicker, so you think Murray had a great game?
Lots of this is based on the fact his the England captain, loads of player's have off days , his not the Lion's captain so he's one of many who need to step up

  10. He's wrong about two things:

    1. The was not SA at close to full strength. Maybe half, and there are several first choice starters who will still come into the test team (Pollard, Vermeulen, De Jager, Mbonambi, Snyman, Mapimpi, etc.)

    2. Hinting that the ref cost them the game, so suggesting bias.

Side-note: there weren't "two tries disallowed". You have to get the ball down over the line, which didn't happen…
