Starring: Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, Rosie Fellner, and Claire Keelan
Michael Winterbottom’s mostly improvised 2010 film, The Excursion, took comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon—or semifictionalized variations thereof—on a cafe tour about northern England. In this witty and incisive abide by-up, Winterbottom reunites the pair for a new culinary highway journey, retracing the actions of the Intimate poets’ grand tour of Italy and indulging in some sparkling banter and impersonation-offs. Rewhetting our palates from the earlier film, the figures take pleasure in mouthwatering meals in stunning configurations from Liguria to Capri though riffing on subjects as diversified as Batman’s vocal sign up, the inventive merits of “Jagged Small Capsule,” and, of course, the virtue of sequels.
Winterbottom trains his digital camera to seize the idyllic Italian landscape and the gastronomic treasures becoming ready and consumed though retaining the film centered on the crackling chemistry involving the two potential customers. The Excursion to Italy effortlessly melds the good comedian interaction involving Coogan and Brydon into quieter moments of self-reflection, allowing audiences into their insightful ruminations on the nuances of friendship and the juggling of spouse and children and job. The result is a biting portrait of modern-day masculinity.
