Salamanca, Spain Excursions – The city lies by the Tormes river on a plateau and is thought of to be one of the most breathtaking Renaissance towns in Europe. The buildings are made of sandstone mined from the nearby Villamayor quarry, and, as the sunshine starts to set, they glow gold, orange and pink. It is this radiant good quality of the stones that has presented Salamanca the nickname La Dorada, the golden city.
In 1218, Alfonso X of León (Alfonso The Intelligent) launched the College – one of the very first in the planet. In 1254, Pope Alexander IV named it one of the 4 primary lights of the planet.
In 2002 Salamanca was the European Cash of Tradition.
